“All the intelligence and talent in the world can’t make a singer.
The voice is a wild thing. It can’t be bred in captivity. It is a sport, like the silver fox. It happens.” (Willa Cather, Song of the Lark)

Poster by Nia O’Reilly Amandes

“She realized that there were a great many trains dashing east and west on the face of the continent that night, and that they all carried young people who meant to have things.
But the difference was that she was going to get them! That was all.
Let people try to stop her!” (Song of the Lark)

I Know Where I’m Going

HerStory, too
I’m honoring one of my favorite writers Willa Cather for Women’s History Month. Her novel, Song of the Lark (named for the painting at the Art Institute) is quoted in Tough Broads & Tender Lasses, our program this Thursday March 23, at the Cliff Dwellers on Michigan Ave. The venerable arts club is a few doors away from where fictional character Thea sang, and where I first studied voice.
Read Song of the Lark. Call of the City, my archived blog.
