MICHAEL P. SMITH SONGWRITER
JULY ENEWS
FALL PREVIEW
On Independence Day, a note from Michael.
For me July has always been a time for scary stuff. It’s when I had the most time to go to the South Orange library (next door) when I was a kid, and it’s when I discovered Ray Bradbury’s Dark Carnival, which is a pretty scary book when you are thirteen. I also found Shirley Jackson (The Adventures Of The Demon Lover) in the summertime, and I am still learning just how scary Shirley Jackson can be. Both Ms. Jackson and Mr. Bradbury were a revelation to me: that scary stories didn’t have to be all musty and dusty and ancient like Edgar Allen Poe or Lord Halifax. The first songs I ever really loved had an element of the supernatural to them: Ghost Riders In The Sky, for instance, and Zombie Jamboree. So now i’m getting some tunes together for a show with Jamie O’Reilly in the fall that is nothing but scary songs. Man, this is so much more fun than going to an office. Or a laBORatory, as Mr. Karloff used to say. So…Happy Fourth!; so glad we’re independent and don’t have to finance Queen Elizabeth, bless her heart. AND Mr. Franco is still dead.
