Creative Memory: “Songs of a Catholic Childhood”
Jamie talks about creating and touring with “Songs of a Catholic Childhood”, the musical concert she created with Michael Smith about life in parochial schools during their “formative” years, and the stories gather from the people its touched. She shares anecdotes as the 4th-girl-in-the-middle of a family of 14 kids, in a small Illinois town during the post-Vatican II, Baby-Boom era of the ’60s and ’70s – AND she talks about the Cardinal Bernadin years of the ’80s, when she toured the musical “Between the Times” in Catholic parishes and colleges throughout the US, which included an appearance for Pope John Paul in San Antonio, TX. Some singing will be included.
Songs of A Catholic Childhood debuted in the fall of 2011 to a full – and captivated house – at Mayne Stage, Chicago, as a benefit for St. Scholastica Academy. Created, produced and performed by Jamie O’Reilly and Michael Smith, the show receives rave reviews. Songs is a sophisticated musical program with storytelling that goes beyond comic send-ups of the nuns, and poking fun at life in parochial school. It is nostalgic for adults, inspiring to young people, and soothing for those healing from the sting of decades of wounding by a flawed Church hierarchy…
With Songs Jamie and Michael relive parochial school memories in a heartfelt – sometimes courageous, sometimes humorous – but always liberating way. Through their journey, we celebrate the wonder of childhood, and open ourselves to the wisdom of aging, and the best things in life.
